On 10 July 2023, GIZ organized a workshop to discuss the implementation of the Thai-German Cooperation on Energy, Mobility and Climate (TGC EMC) with Thai political partners, led by the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP).

Dr Phirun Saiyasitpanich, Secretary-General of ONEP, presided over the workshop, which was attended by representatives of governmental organisations, namely the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE), Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP), the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE), and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).

“The TGC EMC project is important for moving towards the country’s greenhouse gases reduction target and providing technical support in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in each sector according to the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). This support does not focus on investment in infrastructure but on laying a solid knowledge foundation for agencies and propelling them towards greenhouse gas reduction in line with the goals set by every sector—energy, transport, industry, and agriculture—including the climate finance fund,” said the ONEP Secretary-General.

During the workshop, the participants had the opportunity to align the implementation plan of TGC EMC with the existing frameworks that Thailand has established in its efforts to raise greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets from 30% to 40% in 2030. In addition, the project’s steering structure and the collaboration direction were discussed and agreed upon.

This workshop also allowed partners of each TGC EMC component, namely, industry, transportation, renewable energy, biomass, and finance, to refine the workplan in order to ensure that the project will effectively support the national policy and mitigation targets.

Funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) under the International Climate Initiative (IKI), TGC EMC aims to empower key actors in Thailand to plan and implement transformative activities in the energy, transport, and industry sectors in line with the Government’s 2050 carbon neutrality objective. TGC EMC is expected to formally launch in October 2023.
