The Pollution Control Department (PCD) and GIZ organized an online workshop on 25^th November 2022 via the Zoom application to disseminate the results of the project “Integrated Waste and Wastewater Management for GHG Reduction”.

During the 5 years of implementation, the project developed 17 outputs to support relevant stakeholders in their endeavours to foster and manage the transformational change towards the climate-friendly municipal solid waste (MSW) and domestic wastewater (DWW) sectors. Key outputs are (1) Action plan for GHG reduction in the waste sector; (2) Food Waste roadmap; (3) Preliminary feasibility assessment and planning of a low carbon MSW and DWW system approach in three pilot Municipalities; (4) Publication on “Good Practice and Technologies for Climate Friendly MSW and DWW Management”; and (5) Database management tool to monitor the installation and operation of central and cluster domestic wastewater systems (DSPOT).

Local government organizations, Environment and Pollution Control Offices, Provincial Offices of Natural Resources and Environment, research institutions, the  private sector and the public were invited to join the workshop as the main target groups of the outputs which will contribute to their mandates and responsibilities.

Dr. Wijarn Simachaya, President of the Thailand Environment Institute and Director of the BCG Model Sub-committee (Circular Economy Section), gave a keynote speech on “Transitional Change for Effective and Climate-friendly MSW and DWW management”. He stated that knowledge, tools, capacity development, law enforcement and stakeholder cooperation are the keys to driving Thailand to achieve Nationally Determined Contribution or NDC goals.

Dr. Bernd Christiansen, Counsellor for Food and Agriculture, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany,congratulated PCD and GIZ on the project’s success and emphasized that Germany is looking forward to continuing the close partnership with Thailand to drive effective, Circular-Economy-based and climate-friendly resources management policies.

PCD’s Director General, Dr. Pinsak Surasawadi, expressed gratitude to all stakeholders in his opening speech. “I would like to thank the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry, executives and implementors at our 3 pilot municipalities, which are Kumpang municipality, Yasothon municipality and Nakhon Sawan municipality, and all the organizations that have supported and contributed to the success of the project.”
