CONTEXT
The worldwide COVID-19 outbreak is affecting the public health. While significant progress has been made in preparing for and responding to public health emergencies in the ASEAN region, gaps continue to exist between and within countries in the region.
Targeted and high impact measures are part of the immediate COVID-19 support programme of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Among others, the measure is to strengthens regional coordination to respond and recover from COVID-19 and other public health emergencies.
OBJECTIVE
To strengthen ASEAN Regional Coordination for COVID-19 response and recovery as well as other public health emergencies
APPROACHES
The Project complements and builds on the existing mechanisms and regional initiatives in the ASEAN Health Sector Cooperation related to responding to all hazards and emerging threats including public health emergencies and pandemics. The project provides support as follows:
- Provision of medical supplies and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for vulnerable groups in selected COVID-19 hotspot areas in the ASEAN region
- Contributing to regional coordination of work in the implementation of public health emergency preparedness and response initiatives
- Development of project to integrate public health emergency preparedness and response into longer-term ASEAN community building efforts
RESULTS SO FAR
- Provisions of medical supplies to the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand (on-going)
- On-going implementation of activities in the areas of regional public health emergency as follows:
- Development of Cross Border Contact Tracing and Rapid Outbreak Investigation (in collaboration with Indonesia)
- Development of ASEAN Health Protocol in Public Places for Pandemic Preventive Measures (Health Protocol) (in collaboration with Indonesia)
- Strengthening Laboratory Capacity on COVID-19 Bio Genomics for ASEAN Countries (in collaboration with Malaysia)
- ASEAN Capacity Needs Assessment for COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) (in collaboration with Thailand)
