On 9th November 2015, Ministry of Energy, the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP) in cooperation with the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH presented the results of the study of Renewable Energy Scenarios of three pilot provinces Rayong, Phuket and Nan conducted by the German Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) and supported by The Joint Graduate School of Energy Environment (JGSEE). “The study clearly points our opportunities to design truly sustainable electricity supply scenarios in Thailand. Nan is able to cover its entire energy demand from renewables and in Phuket and Rayong significant shares of 40 percent and more could come from renewables”. There was more than 120 participants from provincial energy offices, energy related government agencies, private companies, academic institutes and civil society.
With the data available, the Ministry of Energy in cooperation with GIZ will cooperate to come up with suggestion on a national, provincial and local level to encourage the use of more renewable energy in Thailand. The aim of this is to empower the provinces to consider renewable energy and climate change mitigation measures in their provincial planning processes.
