BACK TO PROJECT

Thai-German Climate Programme-Energy or TGCP-Energy with cooperation from the Strategy and Planning Division (SPD) under the Permanent Secretary Office, Ministry of Energy Thailand, and GIZ, hosted a workshop on provincial energy scenarios.

This is the second in a series of capacity building workshops and aims to equip Provincial Energy Office representatives with the skills and knowledge of energy scenarios which can benefit their provincial planning. The workshop was held at the Amari Don Muang Airport Hotel, Bangkok. The training was divided into two sessions with different participant groups. The first, on 3-4 August covered representatives from 16 provinces) while the second, on 5-6 August was attended by participants from 17 provinces.

The workshop emphasised the importance of provincial energy scenarios and how they should align with Thailand’s national strategy. Participants were introduced to the Provincial Energy System Modeling Tool (PEMT) developed by GIZ and international experts. The tool uses a comprehensive and reliable national and provincial energy database compiling Thai energy data and international expertise to simulate future Provincial Energy Systems for up to 20 years.

Moreover, the system provides an easy-to-understand visualisation of energy balance and energy intensity across different sectors (residential, agriculture, industry, commercial, transport and others). The results will enable users to analyse and select the most suitable provincial energy scenarios. During the workshop, the project team also conducted a brainstorming session on challenge analysis to help provincial energy office representatives pinpoint their issues in relation to the design and development of a complete provincial energy plan.

“The Provincial Energy Modeling tool helps me to have a clear picture of the provincial energy system. I found it easy to generate the data to use in developing the plan. The interface is straightforward and easy to use, which is different from other systems I used before.” Mr. Noppadol Usaha – Director of Nan Provincial Energy Office, Thailand
