After almost two years, the “Support to Financial Audit for the State Audit Organisation of Lao PDR” project under the Thai-German Trilateral Cooperation Programme between Lao PDR, Thailand and Germany has achieved its goal of raising the level of the auditing system of the State Audit Organisation of Lao PDR (SAO Laos) with the close guidance of the International Standard for Supreme Audit Institute (ISSAI).

On 5 September 2018, the Final Project Steering Committee meeting was held in Vientiane, Lao PDR, to present the results of the project. With the cooperation of the State Audit of Thailand, 4 training modules for junior financial auditors and 1 basic accounting training course were developed based on the training needs assessment made by SAO Laos. All these courses were used with a pilot group of 30 junior financial auditors and will be extended to cover other auditors in the future.  The training was moderated by 9 Lao trainers, who received training in training management from the State Audit of Thailand (SAO Thailand).

The achievements demonstrate that peer-to-peer approaches between SAO Laos and SAO Thailand, within the existing initiatives of ASEAN Supreme Audit Institute (ASEANSAI), can raise the level of junior financial auditors and strengthen the capacities of financial audit instructors as well as revise the Lao Training Institute manual and training course curricula. This will help support the long-term training implementation strategy, raise the level of auditing standards and create credibility in the financial audit report of Laos as being of international standard.
