UK, Spain, Germany and Thailand to raise Roi-Et rice farmer’s income with climate-smart rice cultivation system

  • Mars Food, Herba Bangkok S.L (Ebro Foods S.A), the Thai Rice Department and GIZ launch the “Sustainable Hom Mali Rice” project.
  • It aims to support 1,200 Thai rice farmers in the production of 3,500 metric tons of Hom Mali rice in Roi-Et province.
  • The project will develop high-quality and sustainable Hom Mali rice to mitigate climate change.

ONEP and GIZ drive implementation of climate change policy in 60 Thai provinces

  • The Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning and GIZ organised a Climate Policy Project kickoff.
  • It aims to propel national climate change policy towards subnational implementation in 60 provinces.
  • 4 key approaches will be applied; Institutional and Individual Capacity Building, Integration of Climate Change Policy at the Subnational Level, Monitoring and Evaluation, and Financial Mechanism Support.

  • Thailand has an ambitious plan to tackle climate change with climate policy playing a key role.
  • The Climate Change Master Plan was approved by the cabinet as the national climate policy framework for addressing climate change.
  • The Climate Policy Project, under the Thai-German Climate Programme, is supporting the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning in boosting each locality’s ability to combat the changes.

The way forward: health policy makers enhance capacity on climate change impact and health

  • Health policy makers attended a health risks and climate change workshop to prepare for development of policy strategy, measure and activities.
  • The key to tackle climate change and health is integration and cooperation among every sector.
  • It is forecast that the temperature will rise almost everywhere in Thailand from 34-36 degrees Celsius to 38-40 degrees Celsius.

  • Improperly managed waste and wastewater are in part one of the causes of Greenhouse Gas emissions.
  • Related parties define various methods for climate-friendly waste and wastewater management in the sector’s action plan.

  • In the wake of the hydro-dam burst in Laos, North Eastern Provincial Energy officers discuss energy security for the region.

Business and industry cooperation in technical and vocational education and training – towards a better practice for ASEAN

  • The ASEAN Secretariat and the Regional Cooperation Programme for technical and vocational education and training hosted the 7th Regional Policy Dialogue.
  • The forum provided research and practical examples to institutionalise cooperation in technical and vocational education and training (TVET).
  • The regional working group was formed to develop a "Future ASEAN Agenda for TVET".

EU and Laos to boost cooperation on freight transport

  • Sustainable Freight Transport and Logistics in the Mekong Region project supports the Lao PDR in the freight transport business.
  • The Ministry of Public Works and Transport of Lao PDR will cooperate with the project to improve road safety management and vehicle registration.
  • Eco and Defensive Driving training will be designed to increase the competence of local trainers and adapted to the Laos driving context.

Urban Nexus Approach presented at the ICLEI World Congress 2018 in Montreal, Canada

  • A number of cities worldwide intend to become CO2 neutral by 2050 serving as catalysts for other cities on transport and buildings.
  • Employing the urban nexus approach contributes to the realisation and localisation of various Global Agendas.
  • The challenges being faced by cities are access to finance, lack of support from national governments and lack of national–local dialogues.

Mongolian National Development Agency to strengthen Urban Nexus sectors

  • The Mongolian National Development Agency signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • The collaboration is in the areas of environment, land use, energy, water, sanitation and air pollution in Ulaanbaatar. 2
  • From mid-August 2018 onwards, eight working groups are established to work on the SDGs targets.

  • The interactive modular training consists of specific tools for analysing urban challenges embedded in the Global Agendas.
