The second meeting of the ASEAN Municipal Waste Management Enhancement (AMUSE) Project Management Unit was held on 6 July 2023 at the Pollution Control Department, with representatives from GIZ, the Pollution Control Department (PCD), and Department of Environmental Quality and Promotion (DEQP) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, as well as the Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, joining the meeting.
The objective of this meeting was to discuss the conditions and process for selecting model cities for municipal solid waste management in medium-sized tourism areas. The selected model cities will contribute to the development of Good Practice Guidelines that will serve as an example for tourism-related waste management for ASEAN member states.
The discussion concluded with the following initial criteria for selecting the model cities:
- Expanding the definition of ‘medium-sized tourism cities’, whereby Thailand applies the definition of ‘secondary cities’.
- Cities that have received ASEAN-level awards related to cleanliness or tourism.
In addition, the participants reviewed and discussed the AMUSE Project work plan to ensure effective implementation aligned with the project’s objectives.
