Moverity – Digital Data for Fuel Economy

CONTEXT

ASEAN Member States have started to introduce domestic policies to promote improvements in the energy efficiency of vehicles. In order to design sound policies on fuel consumption of cars, adequate data needs to be collected. Key data includes the number of vehicles, distance travelled and fuel consumption. While the number of vehicles and distances travelled are available in most countries, statistics on fuel consumption are scant at best and usually only cover so-called “stated fuel economy” and not real-world fuel economy (FE).

OBJECTIVE

To facilitate actions for fuel efficiency and reduce emissions in the road transport sector as well as to establish the digital Moverity platform as a means to provide transparent, real world data on fuel consumption

APPROACHES

Work Package 1 – Enhancing the Moverity Platform

To make Moverity popular in terms of user numbers and their fuel-up records, it must be as user-friendly, useful and fun as possible. This requires the development of a mobile app in IOS and Android in the Thai and English languages and improvement of the car database with additional country data for the Philippines and Thailand.

Work Package 2 – Outreach and Dialogue

For Moverity to be widely known and used, comprehensive outreach activities are needed. This also includes a connection of Moverity with the established regional dialogue on fuel economy of ASEAN, e.g. online marketing and regional policy dialogue on fuel economy data collection.

Work Package 3 – Fit for the Future

The project builds the foundation for Moverity to stand on its own feet and to continue evolving beyond this project by finding future hosts for the web platform and communication channels

RESULTS SO FAR

The Moverity platform, smartphone application and chatbot are fully developed and ready to be used. They were soft-launched at the 10th Better Air Quality in Asia Conference in Kuching, Malaysia, in November 2018. An explanatory video is available. The current phase of the project focuses on the improvement of some technical features, development of a smartphone application, outreach to users and financial sustainability.
