EU SWITCH-Asia: Promoting Sustainable Consumption and Production
CONTEXT
Rapid economic growth in Asia has lifted many countries out of poverty. This has come at a cost of increased use of natural resources, growing GHG emissions and waste. Sustainability today is no longer simply about increasing efficiencies or complying with regulations. It is about making fundamental changes in the way business is done and the way the world consumes. Results can only be achieved by rethinking our business models and supply chains and designing new consumption patterns. Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) aims to improve the overall environmental performance of products throughout their life cycle, stimulate demand for better products and production technologies and help consumers make informed choices. The European Union is committed to tackling these global challenges together with its partners in Asia. Launched in 2007, its SWITCH-Asia programme has achieved more than a decade of progress on SCP in 24 countries in the region.
OBJECTIVE
- To promote sustainable consumption and production (SCP) patterns;
- To contribute to the economic prosperity of and poverty reduction in Asia;
- To support the development of a green economy and mitigation of climate change in the target countries
APPROACHES
The project comprises two main work packages as follows:
- Capacity building of national and sub-national agencies
- Awareness raising, promotion, visibility & scaling up of good practices on SCP: These activities focus on upscaling and delivering impacts via increased interaction among possible partners and enablers, while targeting awareness raising, encouraging multipliers and building on successes.
RESULTS SO FAR
- Strengthened the implementation of SCP policies at national levels based on the demand received by national governments in Asia.
- Built the capacities of government officials and stakeholders on SCP tools and approaches and their application opportunities.
- Promoted best practices to ensure improvements in SCP patterns.
- Raised awareness and promoted knowledge exchange on local and regional SCP priorities.
- Facilitated information exchange among the components of the programme.
