BACK TO PROJECT

Policy makers of the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP) and national experts enhanced their capacities in a workshop titled ‘Foresight technique for Thailand’s long-term strategy formulation’. The special lecture was hosted by ONEP and the Energy Research Institute of Chulalongkorn University in collaboration with the Thai-German Climate Programme – Policy (TGCP-Policy) on 17 November 2020.

Thailand, through ONEP, is in the process of formulating a long-term strategy for low Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission and climate-resilient development, which will guide the country’s development towards future scenarios in 2050. Policymakers need tools that will allow them to take into consideration multiple relevant aspects of the analyses, incorporating both data analyses as well as sectoral experts’ opinions.

The Foresight science is an application of multidisciplinary analysis such as demographic, social and economic aspects, etc. It is crucial for the experts to analyse and interpret the information of current situations in order to formulate the future scenario in the short term and long-term perspectives.

“This capacity building activity will enable our experts to develop a long-term strategy for low GHG emission and climate-resilient development. We intend to conduct a capacity building activity to formulate a GHG emission mitigation scenario in all sectors including energy and transport, industry and industrial processes and product use, agriculture, forestry and waste sectors in the future,” said Mrs. Katunchalee Thammakul, Head of the Policy and Strategy Section, Climate Change Management and Coordination Division, Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning.

The lecture was given by Dr. Surachai Sathtikunarat, Assistant Director, Office of National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council (NEXPO) and covered the design and systematic application of foresight techniques in the context of low GHG emission and climate-resilient development.
