Thailand moves on transport decarbonisation with training on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
On Friday 25 October 2024, the Thai-German Cooperation on Energy, Mobility, and Climate (TGC EMC) project partnered with the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) to host a training session entitled: ‘Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Deep Dive: Regulations, Decarbonisation, and Evaluation’. This initiative was in support of Thailand’s ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The event brought together approximately 50 dedicated participants from key organisations and government authorities in aviation, transport and the energy sector.
The training provided insights into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), covering its composition, production methods, and the environmental advantages it offers over traditional jet fuels. Participants had the opportunity to engage in hands-on applications and delved into regulatory implications, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the crucial role that Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) plays in measuring the environmental impact of SAF. Furthermore, the training introduced Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) methodology, guiding attendees with the tools needed to accurately evaluate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction resulting from SAF use.
This initiative marks a significant advancement in preparing Thailand’s transport sector for effective decarbonisation. By emphasising the vital role of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, it sets the stage for a more sustainable future and demonstrates a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) under Germany’s Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and jointly implemented by GIZ, the TGC EMC project supports Thailand’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050. Through its five components (Renewable Energy, Transport, Decarbonisation in Industry, Biomass, and Climate Finance) TGC EMC facilitates technology transfer, policy development, and business model innovation.
