TGC EMC hosts brainstorming workshop to advance pulp and paper industry decarbonisation

On 13 March 2025, the Decarbonisation in Industry Component under the Thai-German Cooperation on Energy, Transport, and Climate (TGC EMC), GIZ Thailand, organised a workshop at Best Western Chatuchak Hotel to develop a decarbonisation pathway for the pulp and paper industry. The workshop brought together representatives from the pulp and paper sector and the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) to exchange ideas on strategies for reducing emissions.

Soonthorn Yongvibulsiri, Director of the Pulp and Paper Industry Club under the Federation of Thai Industries, highlighted the importance of the workshop as a platform for knowledge exchange among experts, executives and industry representatives. He emphasised the need to adopt decarbonised technologies and clean energy solutions to effectively reduce carbon emissions. These discussions play a crucial role in shaping the Decarbonisation Roadmap for Pulp and Paper Industry, ensuring the sector is well-prepared for future transitions.

The workshop also focused on policy challenges and the industry’s potential to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Participants provided feedback on the draft roadmap, outlining short-, medium-, and long-term decarbonisation pathways. Key topics included renewable energy solutions, such as biomass, and policy support measures to facilitate the sector’s transition.
This workshop marks a significant step forward in enhancing energy efficiency within the pulp and paper industry. It aligns with the TGC EMC project’s sustainability objectives and supports Thailand’s carbon neutrality goals.

Funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) under Germany’s Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the TGC EMC project supports Thailand’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050. Through its five components – Renewable Energy, Transport, Decarbonisation in Industry, Biomass, and Climate Finance, TGC EMC facilitates technology transfer, policy development, and business model innovation through a sector-coupling approach.
