CONTEXT
Energy projects in developing countries currently face significant challenges, including limited resources and restricted access to energy, resulting in inefficient energy services. Addressing the urgent need for an energy transition to meet the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a key priority of the PACT project. The initiative facilitates project implementation by leveraging GIZ’s long-established infrastructure in the country, in close cooperation with international initiatives, to ensure knowledge exchange among energy experts and effectively support the energy transition.
OBJECTIVE
PACT accelerates the energy transition in partner countries through partnerships with international initiatives, contributing to the transformation toward a modern and clean energy sector.
APPROACHES
In Thailand, PACT promotes the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Knowledge Sharing Platform and the Community of Practice (CoP) for energy modeling to support this goal.
PACT focuses on strengthening international partnerships to drive decarbonisation, with a key collaboration between GIZ and the U.S. Net Zero World Initiative (NZW). This partnership leverages GIZ’s long-established presence in Thailand and NZW’s expertise from the U.S. National Laboratories. In Thailand, PACT promotes the energy transition through the following approaches:
- The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Knowledge Sharing Platform seeks to address gaps in BESS development by identifying key issues and promoting collaboration with stakeholders in the energy, transport, and industrial sectors. International knowledge exchange activities will contribute to the advancement of Thailand’s BESS strategy.
- The Community of Practice (CoP) for Energy Modeling aims to enhance energy modeling capabilities and resolve data-related challenges to support energy transition policies. This will be achieved through coordination with energy stakeholders, modelling experts, and other relevant initiatives.
