New project by GIZ, PTT and thyssenkrupp Uhde (Thailand) to enhance green hydrogen and Power-to-X markets in Thailand

Bangkok, 22 July 2025 – Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, PTT plc and thyssenkrupp Uhde (Thailand) Ltd. joined forces under the International Hydrogen Ramp-Up Programme (H2Uppp) in signing a Cooperation Agreement (CA) for a new public-private partnership (PPP) entitled ‘Opportunity for green hydrogen and sustainable carbon-based products in Southern Thailand’ at PTT Head Office, Bangkok. This new project aims to expand markets and opportunities for green hydrogen and its derivatives in Thailand – focusing on strategic areas in the country’s southern region.
As key innovators in hydrogen and Power-to-X (PtX) from Thailand and Germany, PTT and thyssenkrupp Uhde (Thailand) aim to explore green hydrogen and PtX products’ value and production chains by assessing resources, market potential and feasibility. Ultimately, this will culminate in the development of a strategic blueprint for green hydrogen production and commercialisation.
This landmark cooperation agreement was officially signed by Dr. Buranin Rattanasombat, Chief New Business and Sustainability Officer, PTT, Yossiri Promchuakaew, Executive Director of thyssenkrupp Uhde (Thailand); with Dr. Christian Storost, Head of Division, Funding Instruments and Hydrogen Initiatives, German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), Dr. Roland Weins, Executive Director of GTCC and Dieter Wurche, Customs Liaison of the Embassy of Germany in Thailand as witnesses.

In his opening remarks Dr Christian Storost, Head of Division, Funding Instruments and Hydrogen Initiatives, BMWE, affirmed the continued interest and commitment of the Federal Government of the Republic of Germany in promoting hydrogen and energy technologies through international cooperation and initiatives such as H2Uppp, highlighting Thailand and Southeast Asia among Germany’s strategic partners for climate action and energy transition.
“As a country that imports and supports the ramp-up of hydrogen and energy system technologies, Germany strongly believes in international partnerships in the global efforts to tackle climate problems and advance energy solutions. Southeast Asian nations, including countries such as Thailand, are important partners to Germany in this regard as they are emerging growth hubs that rely on bilateral strength between our countries to be combined and learn from one another. This is also the core of the H2Uppp programme, which brings industries to work together and find out how the respective strengths of each project can contribute to the development of green hydrogen and PtX business solutions.”

Regine Dietz, Head of the Hydrogen Cluster from GIZ, introduced an overview of this new partnership between GIZ, PTT, and thyssenkrupp Uhde (Thailand). In this regard, she highlighted the project’s aim to conduct a study on the opportunities for green hydrogen and carbon-based products in Thailand’s southern region, citing the project’s potential replicability to advancing the local and international green hydrogen and PtX economy through dissemination of the study results and capacity-building activities.
“This new PPP aims to consolidate study results into a blueprint for replication and share the results to stakeholders through dissemination and capacity-building activities. These collaboration efforts reflect our goal to not only study, but also to enable green investment decisions by both public and private players. Most importantly, it constitutes building local capacity, knowledge and ownership essential for sustainable development and international cooperation. Today’s signing ceremony marked an important milestone but also the beginning of a shared journey by our partners. I would like to thank our partners: PTT and thyssenkrupp Uhde (Thailand), for expressing their commitment to this cooperation. And I very much look forward to further exchanges, collaboration and translating the study into concrete actions and investments.”

Yossiri Promchuakaew, Executive Director of thyssenkrupp Uhde (Thailand), underscored the company’s commitment to contributing its expertise in engineering and sustainable solutions to the table for this partnership. He also underscored the significance of key hydrogen and PtX products, especially e-methane and e-methanol, to the development of international green hydrogen and PtX economy.
“At thyssenkrupp Uhde (Thailand), we have long engineering excellence and sustainable solutions. Today, we join hands with two exceptional partners: PTT, a trailblazer in energy leadership, and GIZ’s global experience in sustainable development, which forms a strategic triad. Together, our three organisations will conduct a conceptual study focused on green hydrogen and Power-to-X (PtX) technologies, exploring their conversion into key products such as methane and methanol. These products are not only technical outputs – they are tangible building blocks of a cleaner, more resilient economy.”
Nadja Håkansson, CEO thyssenkrupp Uhde: “This partnership represents a major milestone in our efforts to drive the global green transformation forward. The leadership and vision of PTT in Thailand, supported by our chemical engineering expertise and GIZ’s international knowledge, serves as a strong foundation for a thriving green hydrogen and PtX economy in Thailand. Together, we are advancing sustainable technologies and making a real impact for future generations.”

Lastly, Dieter Wurche, representative from the Embassy of Germany in Thailand, on behalf of H.E. Dr Ernst Reichel, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Thailand, congratulated GIZ, PTT and thyssenkrupp Uhde (Thailand) for embarking on this significant collaboration. His remarks highlighted the potential impact from this new cooperation on enhancing Thailand’s green energy economy at local and international levels.
“Today’s signing ceremony marks another big step for green hydrogen development in Thailand, with the joint efforts of GIZ, thyssenkrupp Uhde (Thailand) and PTT. This project could support the strengthening of energy security and sustainability by reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels and leveraging local renewable and biomass resources for green hydrogen production. It could also boost economic and regional competitiveness by creating local jobs, enabling export via nearby ports, and positioning Thailand as a green energy leader in Southeast Asia.”

In Thailand, green hydrogen has been increasingly recognised for its versatile potential to promote decarbonisation and energy transition in the energy, industry and transport sectors. Its derivatives, including the carbon-based e-methane and e-methanol, offer renewable alternatives for energy and transport fuels. With strong policy support and implementation of a strategic hydrogen plan to leverage the country’s abundant feedstocks and resources, Thailand’s green hydrogen markets are charted to take a more prominent role for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
The International Hydrogen Ramp-up Programme (H2Uppp), funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) and implemented by GIZ, supports green hydrogen projects and market development in selected developing and emerging countries as part of the German National Hydrogen Strategy. By fostering investment in projects and global scaling of green hydrogen markets through this initiative, BMWE is helping meet future green hydrogen demand for Germany and Europe while enabling technology transfer and international cooperation in the global green hydrogen and PtX industry.
H2Uppp Thailand is implemented by GIZ in cooperation with the German-Thai Chamber of Commerce (GTCC). For more information about the H2Uppp programme, please visit: https://www.thai-german-cooperation.info/en-us/international-hydrogen-ramp-up-programme-h2-uppp/ or the H2Uppp – PtX Hub.
