Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP), National Adaptation Focal Point, in cooperation with GIZ, under Risk based National Adaptation Planning (Risk-NAP) Project, initiated area based adaptation planning approach under the framework of Thailand national adaptation plan.

Why is area based adaptation planning is important?
The specific context of the sectors and their correlation in each area is an important factor that needs to be considered. The difference in socio-economic conditions in each area will put the areas to expose to different climate risks. Therefore, considering the correlation of sectors and how the socio-economic is set up will help the area planning to cope and adapt to future risk appropriately.

On 26^th December 2017, ONEP – GIZ – SEA START RC hosted expert consultation meeting on “NAP pilot areas scoping assessment” to present the results of a framework for climate change risk assessment and adaptation planning in pilot areas. The results focused on the correlation of important sectors and future climate risks in the nine shortlisted areas. Comments and suggestions from sector and area based experts were given to fulfil the gaps of the study.

Chiangrai province, Chaopraya river basin, Andaman coastline, and Udonthani province were selected based on variety of context and sectors such as tourism, agriculture system, urban community, human settlement, and water management. Climate risk assessment for these four pilots will be taken forward in order to integrate the risks into development planning system which will also be in aligned with national framework on climate change adaptation.
