CCMB organises Climate Mitigation study trip to Germany: Steering collaboration to achieve Thailand’s NDC goal
The delegates visited the Stausebach Biomass Centre
Between 13 – 17 May 2024, the Climate, Coastal and Marine Biodiversity (CCMB) project took delegates from the Department of Climate Change and Environment (DCCE), the Pollution Control Department (PCD), the Rice Department, and the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) to Berlin and Frankfurt for a Climate Mitigation Study Trip.
During the study trip, the Thai representatives learned best practices, exchanged knowledge on mitigation work and collaborative efforts in achieving carbon neutrality, and gained insights into advanced strategies, technologies, and practices adopted by German organisations to reduce industrial GHG emissions.
Thai delegates met with representatives from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action of Germany (BMWK)
Dr Phirun Saiyasitpanich, Director General of the Department of Climate Change and Environment (DCCE), head of the delegation, along with the Ambassador of Thailand to Germany, H.E. Dr Nadhavathna Krishnamra, led the team in a meeting with officials from the Federal Ministry for the Economic Affair and Climate Action (BMWK). Discussions centred on the fruitful development of climate policy and mitigation efforts and strengthened the cooperation between Thailand and Germany.
The trip also included visits to several key German entities. Participants learned about innovative green steel production methods at GMH Gruppe. The German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) offered advice on climate finance and relevant climate policy research. Waste-to-energy solutions were explored at MHKW Müllheizkraftwerk Frankfurt am Main GmbH, while the Stausebach Biomass Center provided insights on turning biomass and agricultural waste into energy.
Following the successful trip, participants committed to strengthening the coordination across different sectors, which is key to driving decarbonisation efforts. In this regard, the CCMB project serves as a platform for interconnecting relevant agencies in developing Thailand’s climate change policies and policy instruments to achieve the national targets of carbon neutrality by 2050 and net-zero GHG emissions by 2065. The project is funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) under the German’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK).
