Developing community capacities for solar powered irrigation and sustainable farming as well as access to high-quality drinking water in Thailand - Thailand

CONTEXT

Currently, farmers face high uncertainty about water availability and have a low income as they can only harvest one rice crop per year. In the same way, communities and temples also face limited access to clean drinking water and higher living expenses as they need to pay for bottled water. Key challenges in rural capacity development in sustainable agricultural cultivation, water supply, and energy supply call for a comprehensive approach.

OBJECTIVE

To develop cross-cutting capacities and infrastructure for sustainable farming and long-term improved livelihoods of the community in Suvarnabhumi district, Roi-Et province.

APPROACHES

The project develops community capacity for sustainable agricultural practices through the adoption of solar irrigation systems and training the community in implementing economic activities around solar powered water dispenser infrastructure. Community engagement is also considered as a core value of the project, establishing and organizing solar cell services for the rice mill and centre together with the community. Furthermore, community enterprise development to run fair and dynamic community business and service are monitored to ensure sustainability.
