Sustainable Port Development in ASEAN

asean BiocontrolMaritime transport and ports are essential components of international trade and goods movement. Ships represent one of the largest, most difficult to regulate sources of air and water pollution in the world.

The project focuses on the development and implementation of measures and instruments to reduce and mitigate safety, health and environmental risk in accordance with international standards and conventions. The project has signed a collaboration agreement with the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA). It is financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Objectives and Approaches

The project aims to assist ASEAN ports in shifting the emphasis from mere reactive complying with minimum standards to a pro-active approach with capacities and competencies to achieve and maintain quality and sustainability in Safety Health and Environmental management.

Activities are guided by the concept of sustainable development, i.e. are fundamentally holistic, process-based and value-based. Further principles and quality standards that characterise the project include participation, ownership, economic efficiency and subsidiarity.
